Student Teaching, Patapsco, Week 1

March 20th, 2011 | Comments Off on Student Teaching, Patapsco, Week 1

With my first week in high school student teaching complete, I will admit, I miss teaching elementary school. It’s interesting enough to have witnessed the developmental differences between 3rd graders and 5th graders, and how they see the world. Admittedly, it was also nice having my students treat me like a deity. In high school, the same self-driven enthusiasm for completing an assignment feels rare. But, at least it’s there.

The Breakdown
Though Patapsco High is a public school, the schedule works off an odd system. The day is split into four, hour and a half periods. 3rd period is 2 hours long, with a 30 minute lunch placed in one of four blocks. I’ll be teaching three classes (Multimedia II/III, Fundamentals of Art, and a Photo II/III class). An interesting variety.

Thanks to my cooperating teacher, I have a seating chart and roster for all the classes I’ll be teaching, as well as a binder full of other teaching resources specific to BCPS. Learning the names of my students in a class of 35 is tough, but I’m slowly learning them.

On a side note..
My students have started asking me all week if I am related to the artist who shares my last nameI’ve started saying yes.

As part of the Master of Arts in Teaching program at the Maryland Institute College of Art, I must complete two student teaching placements. Tomorrow I begin my secondary placement at the Patapsco High School & Center for the Arts.

This should be good.
